Message from the President, April 2013
In January of 2013, I celebrated two years of working at Antioch University Midwest. My time here has provided me and the campus with wonderful opportunities that continue to unfold. The first opportunity that I had with AUM was to serve as the Interim Vice President for Academic Affairs, leading the faculty through an academic leadership restructuring while also preparing for the reaffirmation of accreditation from both the Higher Learning Commission and the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education. During that time, we also joined other Ohio institutions and converted from a quarter to semester system.
I accepted the opportunity to serve as the President of Antioch University Midwest on July 1, 2012 and have spent my time so far working diligently with our board, faculty, staff, students and alumni to further our mission to better serve our students and the community. We are also pleased to support the work of Antioch University as it partners with Coursera to be the first institution to provide credits for Massive Online Open Courses (MOOCs). While this is not happening now at the Midwest campus, it certainly provides AU with new opportunities to redefine higher education and its accessibility.
The concept of opportunities continues to resonate for me as we work in 2013 and consider the possibilities that will unfold for us individually and collectively. I am encouraged by the many opportunities that lie before us such as a new partnership with Clark State Community College to offer our BA in Management on campus in downtown Springfield, the launch of the Individualized Bachelor of Arts, and exploring and planning new academic programs.
One significant opportunity we have this spring is to demonstrate to our accrediting body, the Higher Learning Commission (HLC), that Antioch University is a premier progressive institution of higher learning that provides a transformative education. Many faculty and staff from all of the five Antioch University campuses across the U.S. have worked tirelessly on our Self-study for the reaffirmation of our accreditation. Being reaccredited by the HLC is an important part of our work in providing quality academic programs and offering federal financial aid resources to our students. We are looking forward to their visit in April.
We will continue the challenging work of examining our operations and our service to students and make any necessary changes to ensure the fulfillment of our mission to “provide learner-centered education to empower students with the knowledge and skills to lead meaningful lives and to advance social, economic, and environmental justice.” We seek your partnership and collaboration toward this work.
We have a vibrant community here that continues to create new opportunities for our adult learners. I am grateful to be a part of it. During the short time I have served as President, one of my greatest pleasures has been to meet alumni and students. I look forward to meeting many more of you. Please re-engage with us as we all work toward Antioch University’s bright future.

Ellen W. Hall became Interim President of Antioch University Midwest on July 1, 2012, following her appointment as Provost and Interim Chief Executive Officer of Antioch March 1, 2012. She first came to AUM in January, 2011 as Vice President for Academic Affairs. She holds an A.B. from Agnes Scott College and the M.A. and Ph.D. from Bryn Mawr College, all in French literature. Her professional appointments have included Associate Professor of French and Assistant Dean of the College at Westminster College in Pennsylvania; the first alumna Dean of the College at Agnes Scott College in Decatur, GA; President of Converse College in Spartanburg where she served as the first female college president in South Carolina; Vice President for Academic Affairs and Dean of the College at Wells College in Aurora, New York. After leaving Wells in 2006, she joined the Registry for College and University Presidents in Peabody Massachusetts in 2007. After joining the Registry she accepted an assignment as Interim Vice President for University Relations and Executive Director of the CWU Foundation at Central Washington University, Ellensburg, Washington before coming to Antioch University Midwest in 2011.
Highlights of her career include founding a Lifelong Learning Program for non-traditional students a Westminster College; diversifying the faculty and implementing a full scale Global Awareness Program at Agnes Scott College; establishing a major effort to explore issues of diversity with faculty and students through a joint Converse College/Wofford College grant from the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation; hiring the first African-American Vice President at Converse College; diversifying faculty and receiving support to sponsor a visiting scholar in Islamic Studies at Wells College; implementing a planning process to build the new science building at Wells College; assisting the Central Washington University Relations Office with completion of its first comprehensive gifts campaign and bringing stability to a unit that was experiencing significant challenge upon her arrival.
In 1995 South Carolina Women in Higher Education awarded her the Martha Kime Piper Award for Outstanding Contributions to Advancing Women in Higher Education. She was given the Central Washington University Presidential Administrator of the Year Award in 2009.
